1st Grade I Ain't Gonna Paint No More

At St. A, 1st graders read the book I Ain't Gonna Paint No More by Karen Beaumont.  Students study self portraits and then "paint" themselves just like the character in the book.  Next week we are going to add a background to finish the project up.

Middle School Scratch Board Designs

Students at St. M are rethinking magazine ads and images to create a piece of art.  Students first find an image that interests them, then they need to transform it into a graphic piece of art.  Here is the first day.

2nd/3rd Split Starts Wayne Thiebaud Value Cakes

St. M 2nd/3rd split and St. A 2nd graders are creating Wayne Thiebaud value cakes.  Students are taught how to create a cylinder and take a slice out of it.  Students then learned how to blend colors to make the object look more three dimensional.  Next week we add decorations and a stand.

4th/5th Split Self Portrait Negatives

Stoneburner and Smith's groups learned about facial proportion.  We practiced our fractions on the face.  Students were given a mirror to look at the details of their face and create a self portrait.  The twist that they had was drawing white pencil negatives on black paper.  This is unusual and a bit more tricky because it does not leave as much room for error.  They took on the challenge and created beautiful pieces!

2nd/3rd Split Learn Monoprints

St. Monica 2nd/3rd grade split learned about monoprints.  It is a kind of print that will only create one print.  Students studied printmaking terms such as print, plate (not the kind you eat off of!), brayer and ink.  Students had such a great time getting messy and creating masterpieces.

4th/5th Radial Symmetry Printmaking

Smith and Stoneburner's groups combined art and math.  We learned about radial symmetry and how shapes, colors and lines revolve in a circular motion.  They started by measuring out their four boxes and creating a radial symmetry design in marker.  The next class period, we learned about he printmaking process and reviewed symmetry.  The final pieces are absolutely wonderful!  I want to hang them in my house!  Excellent work artists!
